Basic drug guide for pharmacy students (Part 2):

G/ Cardio and hematologist medications:

  • Warfarin: to treat and prevent blood clots (anticoagulant)
  • Olmesartan: to treat high blood pressure (hypertension).
  • verapamil: Used to treat High blood pressure, angina, arrhythmias, and cluster headache.
  • Digoxin: for arrythmias and heart failure.
  • Propranolol: for palpitation and headache and thyrotoxicosis
  • Lipitor(atorvastatin)-Crestor (rosuvastatin): used to lower blood cholesterol levels.
  • Fludrocortisone (florinef): Small oral doses of fludrocortisone cause an increase in blood pressure.
  • Amiodarone (cordarone):to restore normal heart rhythm and maintain a regular, steady heartbeat.
  • methyldopa (aldomet):works to lower blood pressure through the central nervous system.
  • ferosemide(lasix): as diuretic for heart failure.
  • Valsartan (diovan): for hypertension and also used for heart failure.                                                                                                           
  • Amlodipine: for used to treat high blood pressure and coronary artery disease.
  • Bisoprolol: for hypertension, palpitation and arrythmias.
  • Aspirin: as anti-platelet.
  • Clopidogrel (piax): as anti-thrombotic.
  • hydroxyurea: treat chronic myeloid leukemia, reduce the need for blood transfusion.
  • busulfex: treat bone marrow transplantation, chronic myelogenous leukemia, and thrombocythemia.

      H/ Gastroenterology medications:

  • Rennie (CaCO3+ MgCO3): for Neutralise excess stomach acid.
  • Omeprazole(Nexium), Lansoprazole: for Reducing the amount of Acid in the stomach.
  • Cimetidine, Ranitidine(zantac): for inhibiting stomach acid production.
  • Metoclopramide: used for treating stomach and esophagus problems, mostly for Treating Nausea and vomiting.
  • Docusate Sodium: for Treating occasional Constipation.
  • Loperamide (Imodium): for Treating sudden Diarrhea.
  • Albendazole: for Treating parasitic worm infection.
  • Simethicone: for Treating excess gas in the stomach.
  • Pylokit (lansoprazole+clarithromycin+tinidizolr): for Treating H-pylori disease in stomach.
  • Librax: for Treating stomach and intestinal disorders.

    I/Dermatology medications:

  • Topical Erythromycin: Used to treat skin acne.
  • fusidic acid (fucidin): used for certain bacterial skin infections.
  • B-sitisterol (mebo): used to reduce sever pain burns and reduce dermal infection.
  • benzoyl peroxide: used for to treat mild to moderate acne.
  • isotretinoin (acretin): used  in the treatment of severe forms of acne.
  •  doxycycline: used to treat moderate to severe inflammatory acne, or mild inflammatory acne that isn’t getting better with other treatments.
  •  Betamethasone betnovate), clobetasol (dermovate), mometasone (elica): used to treat the itching, redness, dryness, crusting, scaling, inflammation, and discomfort of various skin conditions like paoriasis and eczema.
  • clotrimazol,miconazol, nystatin, terbinafine: used in the treatment of fungal skin infection
  • permethrin: used for the treatment for head lice, nits and scabies.
  • zinc oxide: Used to treat diaper rash and some minor burns.
  • Methotrexate: Used to treat psoriasis.
  • Sunscreens: are creams, lotions or oils that protect the skin from the damaging effects of ultraviolet radiation of the sun by providing a chemical or physical barrier to sunlight.
  • Hydroquinone: It’s a skin-bleaching agent that is used to lighten areas of darkened skin. Hydroquinone decreases the formation of melanin in the skin.
  • Isotretinoin: It’s used to treat severe acne that has not responded to other acne medicines. It reduces the oil gland activity and clears inflammation.
  • tazarotene: Used to treat acne and psoriasis.
  • (viranol) Salicylic acid compound(salicylic +lactic +collodion acids): It Used to treat warts and scaly skin conditions.
  • Triamcinolone: it Used to give improvement for some types of alopecia (hair loss)
  • Nystatin: used to treat certain kinds of fungal caused by candida.

K/ Hormonal medications (endocrinology):

  • Levothyroxine (L thyroxine , euthyrox): used to treat underactive thyroid gland (hypothyroidism).
  • Carbimazole (Neomercazole): used to treat overactive thyroid gland (hyperthyroidism).
  • metformin (glucophage): Used in the treatment of type 2 diabetic mellitus.
  • insulin injection e.g(humalog, novomix, lantus): used in the treatment of type 1 diabetic mellitus in all patients.
  • spironolactone (aldactone): Used in the treatment of hypertension, edema (water retention), heart failure…
  • somatropin (genotropin): used in the treatment of dwarfism due to hyposecretion of growth hormone.
  • cabergoline (dostinex): used in the treatment of hyperprolactinemia,( prolactin stimulates breast growth and production of milk).
  • HCG (pregnyl): indicated for the induction of ovulation and pregnancy in the anovulatory infertile woman.
  • vasopressin: used in the treatment of diabetic insipidus.

J/ Urology medications:

  • tamsulosin (omnic) , alfazosin (xatral), doxazosin (cardura): used to treat signs and symptoms of an enlarged prostate (benign prostatic hyperplasia)
  • finasteride (proscar), dutasteride (avodart): used to treat signs and symptoms of an enlarged prostate (benign prostatic hyperplasia
  • Oxybutynin (ditropan):used to relief symptoms of overactive bladder.
  • phenazopyridin (urisept): is indicated for the symptomatic relief of pain, burning, urgency, frequency, and other discomforts arising from irritation of the lower urinary tract mucosa caused by infection, trauma, surgery, endoscopic procedures.
  • potassium citrate (kalinor): used to treat and prevent kidney stones
  • rowatinex, cyctone (herbals) :indicated for the treatment of urinary tract spasm and inflammation associated with urolithiasis kidney stone). It is also assists in the dissolution and expulsion of stones in the renal system.
  • cranberry (urocalm): used for (urinary tract infection) prevention.
  • Prostamin: it is a food supplement used to maintaion good function of prostate.
  • nitrofurantoin (uvamin): used to treat bladder infection.
  • Fosfomycin: used to treat bladder infection.
